LaRue Windham for Sheriff: Morale, Proactive Policing, and School Safety

Recorded April 27, 2026, after the March primary, in which Windham had no Republican opponent. Published as it aired; some of the news discussed has moved since.

Welcome to the Carolina Cabinet, Cumberland County's smartest hour of talk radio. Peter Pappas and Laura Mussler are joined in studio for the full hour by LaRue Windham, the Republican candidate for Cumberland County Sheriff.

The table opens on the gunfire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner and the question of where political violence starts, with Laura's research on attacks against presidents and the rhetoric that surrounds them. From there: Jimmy Kimmel and the First Lady, the General Assembly's short session (budget, Medicaid, teacher pay and the grocery tax), and a spirited back-and-forth on SB 50, concealed carry and how much training should come with it.

Windham then explains what a sheriff's office actually does, from the jail and the courthouse to serving papers. He talks about morale inside the department, moving from reactive to proactive policing, working with other agencies, and why school resource officers matter.

Early voting is underway now, and Election Day is November 3. Find all of our candidate conversations at thecarolinacabinet.com.
